Hajia (Dr.) Maryam Sani Abacha, wife of the late Nigerian President, General Sani Abacha, has extended her heartfelt sympathy to the people of Maiduguri following the devastating floods that recently hit the region.
In her message, she called on all Nigerians to offer whatever support they can to help alleviate the suffering of the affected people.
“I sympathize with all Nigerians, especially the people of Borno. Borno is my home and these are my people, as both my parents are from there,” she noted.
Maryam Abacha shared that she had been in touch with her mother's family, who were also affected by the flood. “Even this morning, we discussed relocating them to a safer area because their home was destroyed. My children and I have already planned ways to support the people of Maiduguri with food, money, and other essentials. If everyone contributes a little, we can make a big difference,” she emphasized.
Reflecting on a similar disaster during her husband’s presidency 30 years ago, she mentioned how they had extended help then as well. She urged the government to take proactive measures to prevent future disasters, particularly by repairing the Alau dam responsible for the flooding.
“We must fix the dam to avoid further tragedies. Unfortunately, in this country, we tend to be careless, and it leads to trouble,” she lamented.
She called on all Nigerians to assist the people of Maiduguri, adding, “No amount is too small. Let us all come together to help. May Almighty Allah protect us from future disasters and turn this flood into a blessing. May He also wash away the bloodshed caused by Boko Haram in Maiduguri.”
In conclusion, Hajia Maryam Abacha prayed for Nigeria’s prosperity, urging unity and compassion among Nigerians. “May Almighty Allah bless Nigeria, and may we always stand by one another,” she said.
