After years of wearing the uniform and serving the nation, retirement presents security personnel with a new challenge, adjusting to life outside active service. In Yola, the IBI Training Centre is helping officers prepare for this transition through a pre-retirement empowerment programme.
The seminar, organised by retired Lieutenant Commander Ibrahim Baba Inna, Chief Executive Officer of IBI Training Centre, was held under the theme, “Planning Today for a Secure and Productive Life After Service.”
Baba Inna said his personal experience as a retiree inspired him to establish the initiative as a way of giving back.
He explained that although the programme was initially conceived for military personnel, he extended it to other security agencies to benefit more serving officers.
The seminar brought together personnel from the Nigerian Army, Air Force, Correctional Service, Civil Defence, Immigration, Federal Road Safety Corps and NDLEA to share experiences and discuss the challenges of life after service.
Baba Inna urged officers to develop the right mindset and plan early, stressing that retirement should not be seen as the end of a productive life but a transition into another phase.
He also highlighted available support systems, including the Defence Health Maintenance Limited and military pension arrangements, noting that his personal experience had shown that life after service was not necessarily without support.
One of the participants, Superintendent of Corrections Adamu Yahaya, described the seminar as timely and informative, saying many public servants retire without adequate knowledge of how to manage life after active service.
Through the initiative, IBI Training Centre hopes to encourage serving personnel to prepare for retirement before leaving their jobs.
The message is that while service may end, a meaningful and productive life can continue with the right preparation.
