President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate release of all minors detained for alleged involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protests in August. This decision comes after three minors and an adult collapsed during their court appearance last week in Abuja, sparking widespread criticism over the treatment of the detained youth.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Monday, during a briefing with State House correspondents following his meeting with the president.
"The president has ordered the immediate release of all minors arrested by the police, without prejudice to any legal processes," Mr. Idris stated. He added that the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction has been tasked with ensuring the minors' welfare and arranging their reunion with their families.
Furthermore, the government plans to establish a committee to investigate the conduct of officials involved in the detention. Any official found to have acted unlawfully will face disciplinary measures.
Although the police have defended their actions in prosecuting the minors, public outcry has intensified, with many Nigerians and human rights organizations condemning the detention of minors in adult courts instead of juvenile courts.
The Ministry of Women Affairs recently reported that 52 minors were in detention over the August protests, during which thousands of Nigerians took to the streets to demand improved living conditions.
