The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has granted Nigeria three points and three goals for their unplayed match against Libya in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
This decision followed a probe initiated by CAF President Patrice Motsepe after controversy surrounding the Nigeria vs Libya fixture. Motsepe emphasized that CAF would not tolerate unsportsmanlike conduct or unfair practices in African football.
A statement from CAF's Disciplinary Board Chair, Ousmane Kane, confirmed the ruling after the committee's investigation found Libya guilty of mistreating the Nigerian team. As a result, the match scheduled for October 15, 2024, in Benghazi was forfeited by Libya, with a 3-0 scoreline in Nigeria's favor. The Libyan Football Federation was also fined $50,000.
The Nigerian team had endured harsh treatment at a Libyan airport, including being stranded for hours without access to food or the internet. This situation was only resolved through diplomatic efforts and social media campaigns.
With the ruling, Nigeria now leads their group with 10 points, edging closer to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with two matches remaining. A win or draw against Benin Republic in their next game would secure their spot in the finals in Morocco.
