| Honourable Abdullahi Umar Yapak |
In the rhythms of the recently created Fufore Emirate, where tradition speaks with monarchical authority and honour is reserved for men of uncommon merit, history rose gracefully to greet destiny as Honourable Abdullahi Umar Yapak, a hopeful 2027 APC State Assembly Member for the Verre Constituency, Fufore local government area of the Adamawa, was turbanned the first Sarkin Kudun Funange; a coronation not merely of culture but of character.
For the people of Funange, beyond bestowal of a revered traditional title the event was the celebration of a life steeped in sacrifice, strengthened by service and sanctified by statesmanship.
From the quiet countryside of Karlahi in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State, where he was born on December 12, 1972, emerged a young boy whose humble beginnings concealed a horizon of remarkable possibilities.
In the modest embrace of rural life, Abdullahi Umar Yapak cultivated the virtues that would later define his public persona; discipline, diligence, decency and determination.
Those who knew him in his formative years recall a youth driven not by noise but by noble ambition; a calm, calculating and community-conscious mind whose dreams stretched far beyond the dusty paths of his native village.
Educated within his local community between 1978 and 1989, Yapak’s academic journey was shaped by resilience and remarkable resolve.
His intellectual hunger later led him to the Interim Joint Matriculation Board programme at Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola, where he distinguished himself through scholarly excellence before proceeding to the then Federal University of Technology, Yola - now Modibbo Adama University - where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 2006.
Yet, even before attaining university laurels, Yapak had already etched his presence within public administration; in 1995, armed with uncommon financial acumen and entrepreneurial instinct, he joined the Financial Department of the Fufore Local Government Authority, there, his precision, prudence and professionalism quickly elevated him through the ranks.
For nearly two decades, he served with steadfast integrity, eventually attaining the rank of Senior Accountant, a role in which he became renowned for administrative excellence, fiscal discipline and institutional loyalty.
But destiny, it seemed, had drafted him for broader battles beyond bureaucracy; In 2014, propelled by persistent calls from constituents who saw in him a dependable defender of their aspirations, Yapak resigned from the civil service to embrace the unpredictable terrain of politics, it was a bold transition, yet one driven by conviction rather than convenience; the people responded with resounding confidence.
In 2015, he was elected to represent Verre Constituency in the Adamawa State House of Assembly under the platform of the All Progressives Congress; what followed was a legislative career distinguished by purposeful representation, pragmatic policymaking and people-focused progress.
Within parliamentary corridors, Hon. Yapak emerged as a voice of balance, courage and constructive engagement; as Deputy Chief Whip and Chairman of critical committees including Education, Appropriation and Intergovernmental Affairs, he demonstrated a rare blend of intellect and inclusivity.
His legislative interventions carried both compassion and consequence; from championing the Child Protection Bill to advocating for the extension of teachers’ retirement age, his contributions reflected a statesman deeply invested in human development, educational reform and social justice.
His stewardship earned him overwhelming public trust and political reaffirmation, culminating in his re-election in 2019 and another successful mandate in the 2023 party primaries.
Yet, beyond politics lies another profound portrait of the man now crowned Sarkin Kudun Funange that of a peacebuilder, philanthropist and bridge-builder.
In October 2019, his unwavering commitment to peace advocacy, conflict mediation and social cohesion earned him the distinguished recognition of United Nations-POLAC Peace Ambassador, cementing his identity as a reconciler across communities and cultures.
His influence, however, transcends legislative chambers and diplomatic engagements; as an entrepreneur and visionary chief executive, Yapak has become a catalyst for economic empowerment, reportedly creating employment opportunities for over 1,000 individuals while sustaining impactful humanitarian interventions across communities.
To many youths, he represents possibility; to widows and vulnerable families, he symbolises compassion; to traditional institutions, he embodies loyalty and cultural reverence; little wonder, then, that several traditional titles have followed his footsteps across Northern Nigeria, including Danburam Verre, Magajin Koma and Dan Iyan Kwanchi of Karim Lamido in Taraba State - honours that reflect his enduring influence and widespread acceptance.
But perhaps none bears deeper symbolism than the title now bestowed upon him by the Fufore Emirate.
As Sarkin Kudun Funange, Yapak assumes a role rooted in financial trust, communal responsibility and royal confidence, a fitting recognition for a man whose life has been defined by accountability, advancement and altruism.
Indeed, the turbanning ceremony unfolded not merely as a cultural spectacle but as a stirring human story of perseverance rewarded and purpose recognised.
Amid colourful regalia, resonant royal drums and heartfelt tributes from admirers, colleagues and community leaders, the atmosphere radiated reverence for a leader many described as calm in counsel, courageous in conviction and compassionate in conduct.
Though adorned with honours and elevated by influence, those closest to him insist his greatest strength remains his simplicity.
An avid reader, passionate traveller and sports enthusiast, Yapak continues to embody the humility of his beginnings despite the heights of his accomplishments.
Above all, he remains devoted to his family, a loving husband and proud father of four children.
As the Fufore Emirate crowns its first Sarkin Kudun Funange, it also crowns a compelling legacy of service above self.
For in Honourable Abdullahi Umar Yapak stands the portrait of a modern northern statesman- principled in public life, purposeful in leadership and profoundly connected to his people.
And as the royal turban settles firmly upon his head, history itself appears to whisper a fitting tribute: That true honour is not inherited by privilege alone, but earned through years of sacrifice, sincerity and sustained significance.
