In a decisive display of democracy, Abdullahi Ibrahim of Adamawa Television Corporation (ATV) Yola has been elected the new Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Adamawa State Council, following a spirited contest that saw him secure 123 votes, leaving his opponent Fidelis Jockthan trailing with 45 votes.

The election, held on Wednesday at the NUJ State Secretariat in Yola, was conducted under the watchful supervision of representatives from the national leadership of the NUJ, security operatives, and independent observers. Delegates from nine NUJ chapels across the state participated in what has been widely described as a peaceful and credible electoral process.

While the chairmanship was the sole position contested, the remaining executive seats were filled unopposed, reflecting a consensus across the union's ranks. Those elected unchallenged include:

Nuwamayinah Idda – Vice Chairperson
Kissinger Bukar – Secretary-General
Mary Adamu – Assistant Secretary-General
Hadiza Aliyu Mahmud – Auditor
Owolabi Efuwape Adenusi – Financial Secretary
Joe Dimon – Treasurer

Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, National Chairman of NUJ, represented by Zare Baba, lauded the election committee for what he termed “a model of transparency and unity, a benchmark for other councils.” He praised the orderly conduct and professionalism that defined the process.

In his acceptance speech, the newly elected chairman Abdullahi Ibrahim expressed heartfelt gratitude to NUJ members for their trust and support. He pledged to lead with integrity, foster unity, and elevate the professional standards of journalism across the state.

“With the mandate, he said, newly elected leadership would work not just for progress, but for a press that is principled, proactive, and protective of the public good.

The newly constituted executive council was sworn in immediately and is expected to hit the ground running in steering the union toward greater cohesion, capacity building, and professional advancement.
