Yola, Adamawa State – Adamawa State Governor, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has dissolved the Management Board of the Jimeta Ultra Modern Market with immediate effect, following a scandal involving the alleged illegal sale of an access road within the market.
The decision, announced in a press statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, comes in the wake of an investigative report by Voice of Arewa, which exposed the controversial sale of a crucial access route between blocks in the market for approximately ₦7 million.
The access road in question is not only vital for vehicular and pedestrian movement but is also considered a potential emergency exit—raising serious safety and regulatory concerns among market users and the general public.
“The Chairman of the Board and other members have been relieved of their duties with immediate effect,” the statement read. “They are to hand over all government property in their possession to the Commissioner of Commerce and Industry, who will now oversee the market’s operations.”
Governor Fintiri directed the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to ensure a seamless transition and to work diligently to maintain the market’s functionality. He emphasized that the welfare of traders and other stakeholders must be prioritized, stressing the economic importance of the market to the state.
“The market's success is crucial to the state's economic well-being, and we expect the ministry to take all necessary steps to ensure its optimal operation,” the Governor said.
The dissolution has been met with a mix of relief and renewed calls for deeper investigations into alleged mismanagement of public assets within the market. Many traders have welcomed the move as a step toward restoring accountability and transparency in market administration.
The scandal has sparked widespread criticism from civil society groups and concerned residents, who described the alleged transaction as a breach of public trust.
Further developments are expected as the Ministry of Commerce and Industry takes over management and possibly initiates a review of past decisions made under the dissolved board.
