UDUS Alumni Association Honors Malam Musa Umar Yashi with Distinguished Alumnus Award

In a grand testament to the age-old adage, "Give honor to whom honor is due," the National Body of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) Alumni Association has bestowed its prestigious Distinguished Alumnus Award upon Malam Musa Umar Yashi.

The event, held during the National Convention in Abuja, was a remarkable convergence of illustrious alumni from all walks of life.

Malam Musa Umar Yashi, the Executive Director (Humanitarian Affairs) of the North-East Development Commission (NEDC), was selected from among millions of UDUS alumni for this high honor. His extraordinary contributions to humanity and relentless service to the North-East region have written his name in golden letters.

From providing emergency relief to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to spearheading resettlement, rehabilitation, and vocational training programs, Yashi’s efforts have touched countless lives across Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe states.

President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR awarded him as the Nigeria’s Humanitarian Person of the Year 2022. As a true unionist per excellence, Musa Yashi was elected NUBASS President, UDUS Chapter in 1979-1980 and subsequently as the NUBASS National President in 1980-1981.

Under his stewardship, the commission’s interventions have been nothing short of a lifeline for many, transforming despair into hope and adversity into opportunity. Vocational training, job creation for unemployed youth, and empowerment of women have become hallmarks of his legacy, likened to a Midas touch that turns challenges into triumphs.

Yashi’s illustrious civil service career further underscores his worthiness. Having risen to the pinnacle of federal service, his journey began during the military era at Dodan Barracks in Lagos and culminated in his retirement as a federal director in Abuja. His trail of achievements reflects a life devoted to the greater good.

The event was a gathering of UDUS’s crème de la crème, featuring first-class Emirs, chiefs, university dons, and influential alumni from diverse fields, including past and present governors, federal executives, lawmakers, and industry leaders. Yet, among such accomplished peers, Musa Yashi’s name stood out, making him a fitting recipient of the Association’s most distinguished honor.

In the words of Nafi’u Yusuf Zwall, Chairman of the Bauchi State Chapter of the UDUS Alumni Association, “The award to Malam Musa Umar Yashi is not just recognition it is a celebration of merit, a tribute to excellence, and proof that greatness does not go unnoticed. Indeed, this is honor given to whom honor is due.”

For the UDUS Alumni Association, the recognition of Yashi is not merely an award; it is a clarion call to emulate his virtues of selflessness, dedication, and commitment to humanity.
