Following a report by VOICE OF AREWA correspondent on the courtesy visit paid by the Association of Electric Bike Users to the Senior Special Assistant to the Adamawa State Governor, the Adamawa State Police Command has officially clarified that there is no ban on the use of electric bikes in the state.
The clarification was made by the Commissioner of Police, who was represented by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Karewa Division. According to the police, the ban announced in March 2024 only applies to any form of motorcycles
This clarification comes in response to growing concerns and complaints from electric bike users who reported being wrongly targeted by some security personnel under the assumption that electric bikes were also included in the ban.
During the courtesy visit, the association had urged the government to intervene, stressing that electric bikes are a vital and affordable means of transportation—especially at a time when the cost of petrol has made traditional motorcycles expensive to operate.
The chairman of the association reiterated their willingness to cooperate with authorities and comply with any regulations put in place, so long as their right to use electric bikes is protected.
The governor’s aide, Hon. Ahmed Lawan, had earlier promised to escalate the issue to the appropriate authorities to ensure that electric bike users are not unjustly harassed.
This development is a major victory for thousands of residents who depend on electric bikes for their daily livelihood and movement across the state.
