... Fintiri procured 10 luxurious buses as part of Palliative measures to cope cost
As part of measures to cushioning the impact of fuel subsidy removal on the people, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State Friday flagged off distribution of sixty thousand bags of 25kg free rice to vulnerable households in the state.
At the symbolic presentation of the food item to beneficiaries which held at Karewa in Yola North Local Government Area, Fintiri said the commodity which was initially designed to be sold at subsidized rate will now be distributed free while the cost will be shared between the state and local governments.
With the exemption of committee members and elites, Governor Fintiri said the rice should be given to people irrespective of party affiliations to mitigate their pains resulting from fuel subsidy removal.
“Specifically we are beginning with the distribution of 60, 000 bags of rice 25kg free of charge to vulnerable households irrespective of party affiliation. Committee members and the elites should be sidelined in this template,” he said.
In addition to this, Governor Fintiri said the state government in collaboration with federal and local governments is procuring large quantity of food items especially rice and maize for distribution to people.
He said the government has already commenced payment of special allowances to civil servants and pensioners, and distributed nealy 100 trucks of high quality fertilizer to workers and farmers as well as purchased luxurious buses to ease transport difficulties.
The Governor explained that the war between Russia and Ukraine as well as climate change have been some of the factors responsible for the high cost of food items which he said was not only peculiar to Nigeria but a global phenomenon.
“Let me said that the current economic hardships especially the high cost of food items is not only due to fuel subsidy removal nor only peculiar to Nigeria but some of the factors include Russia and Ukraine war as well as climatic change,” he said.
He urged people to protect the environment while restating the ban on cutting down of trees for charcoal production in the state, vowing to deal decisively with the violators of the law.
In the same vain, he said the government would renew the campaign for planting of more trees with great vigour, saying the measure would protect and help sustain the environment and livelihood.
He called on farmers to resist the temptation of selling their fam produce shortly after harvest, and reassured that the government would continue to encourage and support people to embrace dry season farming.
On the impending flood disaster in the state as a result of release of water from Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, Governor Fintiri called on people especially those along the banks of River Benue to relocate to safer areas.
He therefore directed local government area councils to take proactive measures to address any eventuality that may arise from the flood, urging the the state residents to continue to have confidence in the government.
The Chairman Committee for Co-ordination and Distribution of Palliatives, who doubles as Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Auwal Tukur said the programme was meant to bring soccer to the people.
